Night Guard Design Overview

Learn the best practices for creating an effective night guard design.

SprintRay Cloud Design offers two pathways for creating night guards: AI Night Guard and Manual Night Guard. Both allow you to customize your appliance for fit, comfort, and function, but each has unique workflows and options.

This article will walk through tips, tricks, and available settings for each option.

AI Night Guard

AI Night Guard provides an automated workflow for creating a guard design in just minutes.

Workflow Overview

  1. Select the arch you’d like to design for (upper or lower).
  2. Choose bite scan type:
    1. Closed bite → allows customization of occlusal thickness.
    2. Open bite (preferred) → we recommend at least 1.5 mm. If less, the bite will be virtually opened.
  3. Select your scanner brand.
    1. If using iTero, ensure “per arch” export is enabled when exporting files.
  4. Upload your upper and lower scans via Cloud Drive or drag-and-drop.
  5. Submit the case — your design will be ready in just a few minutes.

Available Options

  • Fabrication Method: Self Print, or Print & Ship (+$70, U.S. customers only, 2–4 additional days).
  • Material Choices:
    • SprintRay Night Guard resins
    • SprintRay Night Guard Splint resin
    • Keystone Hard
    • Keystone Soft
  • Arch Selection: Upper or Lower.
  • Bite Scan Type: Closed or Open (preferred).
  • Occlusal Plane Smoothness:
    • Smooth & flat plane (no indentations)
    • Anatomical occlusion (indentations)
  • Retention & Tightness:
    • Less tight
    • Standard (recommended for most)
    • More tight
    • Tip: Use more tight for flexible resins or low-retention cases. Use less tight for rigid resins.
  • Labeling: Add a label up to 5 characters.
  • Additional Notes: Include any extra instructions — more detail helps ensure accuracy.

Manual Night Guard

Manual Night Guard cases are designed by SprintRay’s team of expert technicians. They offer additional design options and guard types beyond the AI workflow.

Workflow Overview

  1. Start a new Manual Night Guard treatment in Cloud Design.
  2. Select patient, arch, bite type, and design preferences.
  3. Upload scans and provide treatment details.
  4. Submit case for design.

  • Retention & Tightness:
    • Less tight
    • Standard (recommended)
    • More tight
    • Tip: Use more tight for flexible resins or when additional retention is needed. Loosen for rigid resins.
  • Labeling: Add a label up to 5 characters.
  • Additional Notes: Add any design-specific requests. The more information you provide, the more accurate the appliance.

Key Tips

  • Open bite scans are preferred for accuracy and easier articulation.
  • Detail matters — always include preferences in the notes for faster turnaround and fewer revisions.
  • Material selection affects fit — flexible resins may need tighter retention; rigid resins often require looser settings.
  • Use rush service when chairside time is critical. For night guards, rush cases are typically completed in 45 minutes.
  • Print & Ship is best when in-office printing is not available, but adds 2–4 days for shipping.
